Brewer Foundation for Civic Engagement

The Brewer Foundation for Civic Engagement, Inc. a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foundation seeks to promote civic engagement by youngsters who live in Boone County.

The private foundation awards annual scholarships to Boone County high school and middle school students who demonstrate an interest in or participate in civic engagement activities.

“I started the foundation primarily to encourage the youth in our community to take a more active role in community service and promote more civic engagement in our community,” Boone County Commissioner Jesse Brewer said. “I think our next generation of our kids need to be more engaged in what is going, not only in their own community but in the nation and the world.”

The foundation awards $250 scholarships each year to a senior at Boone County’s five high schools: Boone County High School, Connor High School, Larry A. Ryle High School, Randall K. Cooper High School, and Walton-Verona High School.

It also awards a $100 scholarship each year to an eighth-grader at the county’s six middle schools: Camp Ernst Middle School, Connor Middle School, Gray Middle School, Ockerman Middle School, Jones Middle School, and Walton-Verona Middle School.

“I believe that aware, informed, and engaged citizens are the greatest assets in our democracy and that engaged people have the inherent capacity to solve many of the most critical problems in their communities,” Brewer said.

“That’s why I’m encouraging the young people in Boone County to become more engaged in their communities and to think about how they can make a difference. After all, they are the future leaders of our community.”

Initial funding for the foundation has come from Brewer, who operates a property management company in Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati, as well as other individuals, corporations, and organizations.

The Internal Revenue Service recently recognized the foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, so any contributions made to the foundation are tax-deductible.
